LAST weekend brought the eagerly-awaited PG dual contest between Penarth's Rectory Road and Windsor bowling clubs and, with the two games producing an aggregate shots difference of 59 shots, which must be some sort of all-time record, the latter were well and truly whacked on both greens. This was a result to go down in the annals of Penarth bowls.

The PG1 game at Rectory Road finished 86-57, with the home win and three successful rinks earning a valuable 12 points. The outstanding result came from Clive Fry, Ron Birkby, Reg Jones and Phil Davies who won 29-10. The Bob Lewis rink also ran out easy winners, beating the Windsor captain's rink 25-10.

The Colin Grant rink continued their good form by demolishing the Ken Macleod rink 20-13. Apart from the first end, Colin was never behind. Despite a battling display, Bob Hill's rink was unable to secure a Windsor whitewash as they went down 12-24.

The PG2 side crossed the great divide and performed superbly at Windsor to bring home13 points from a resounding 30-shot victory (86-56 ). Captain Lawrence and his rink earned a valuable point by taking three shots on the last end to snatch a 22-22 draw. Mike Conway's rink led from start to finish for a stunning 27-6 margin, with Charlie Mould, John Petersen and Brian Hocking all weighed in with great performances. Ron Maggs also led all the way through for a 21-13 success. Not to be outdone, Roger Gidman and his men hung on valiantly to prise another two points with a single-shot win (16-15).

Towards the end of the day, dark clouds were seen to be gathering over the Windsor clubhouse and the mumblings could be heard deep into the night. At Rectory Road, the sun shone brightly and with a warmth that was a joy to behold.

Earlier in the week the Munro Cup side was again all smiles as they travelled to Llantwit Major and secured a very creditable 77-59 win. The victory earned 10 points against last year's winners who are also setting the pace this year. Bob Hill's rink pretty well nailed down the win with a 30-7 success. Clive Fry rink also came through with a 19-14 result, taking nine shots to two over the last five ends to make sure of victory. Bob Lewis (12-19) and Dave Dalby (16-19) both went down. Dave was unfortunate to drop three shots on the last end.

The win enables Penarth to maintain a challenge towards the top of the Munro competition.
