WHETHER you’re a seasoned walker or fancy an evening stroll with family and friends in beautiful surroundings, Walk 10 at Margam Park on August 16 is the perfect excuse to put on your walking shoes, pack a picnic and join the experience.

Walk 10 at Margam Park is part of a series of 10k evening walks at 19 stunning locations throughout the UK this summer.

The Margam Park event starts at 5.30pm and following the walk you’ll enjoy entertainment for the whole family including live music, fireworks and a Hog Roast.

Registration is £10 per person (children under 16 go free - on the night adult registration is £20) and everyone is asked to raise as much as possible in support of Marie Curie. All the funds raised will help Marie Curie provide more care, free of charge, to terminally ill people at the Marie Curie Hospice Cardiff and the Vale and in their own homes.

Walk Ten participants will have exclusive access for an evening stroll through the grounds of Margam Park. The magnificent Margam Castle, Orangery with ornamental gardens and Deer Park are set within 1000 acres of breath-taking countryside.

After losing his beloved wife Mary to pancreatic cancer in February 2011, Tom Candlish from Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan decided that he wanted to show his appreciation to the Marie Curie Hospice, Cardiff and the Vale who looked after Mary in her final week by signing up to Walk Ten at Margam Park. This year will be the third time he has taken part in Walk 10 in memory of his wife.

Tom, who is now retired but previously worked in the RAF at St Athan said: "My Mary spent her final week at the Marie Curie Hospice, Cardiff and the Vale and I will forever applaud the efforts of the nurses and everyone else who cared for Mary and I during this difficult time.

"The hospice is a wonderful place with stunning views and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Mary wished to spend her last few days at home surrounded by her family and friends and Marie Curie made this possible.

"They arranged delivery of a special bed and all her medication and a nurse came overnight to care for Mary. Mary passed away very peacefully two days after arriving home."

Tom added: “Walk 10 is just one event that I’ve always taken part in as it’s such a wonderful venue and stunning walk through the park, and I will be taking part again this year.

"I felt I wanted to give something back and we all need to support this wonderful cause as who knows when we may require help from Marie Curie ourselves."
