ST CYRES School students achieved the best ever A-level results in the school’s history today.

83.2 per cent of results were between A* to C, with 41 per cent of results being A* to A.

98 per cent of St Cyres Sixth Form students have also been awarded the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma, which is equivalent to an A grade at A-level.

Dr Jonathan Hicks, head teacher at St Cyres, said:

“There is now a more challenging environment for the country’s young people in terms of university places and employment prospects but our students are well placed to enter this competitive arena.

“This is due to their own hard work and the professionalism and dedication of our teaching staff who have supported them every step of the way. The experience our sixth form students have gained through studying for the Welsh Baccalaureate will have given them a head start in their university studies. I congratulate every one of them on their achievements and wish them well for the future.”

Scott Britt, assistant head teacher, said this year’s results were the best they have ever had: “We are really pleased with our results as we have bucked a national trend.

“Almost every pupil has got into their first choice of university and we have got a lot of pupils that have done particularly well.”

Alex Baston, 19, stayed back a school year so that he could battle a cancerous tumour on his leg, ewings sarcoma, and went on to achieve two A’s and two B’s, and is now set to study Law at Reading University.

“I was so nervous last night I thought I was going to pass out,” he said.

“I’m so chuffed to get my results and get into university.”

Head Boy Gareth Lennon achieved A’s in Geography and History and a B in Politics and is set to study History at Cardiff University.

“I’m over the moon with my results,” he said.

“I was so nervous the night before and I didn’t want to check UCAS online in the morning.”

He added that he wanted to go on to become a history teacher.

Chloe Whiteley achieved A*’s in Maths and Further Maths, and an A in Chemistry, and is set to study Maths at the University of Bath.

“I couldn’t be happier with my results,” she said.

Three out of four of the pupils that studied Further Maths at the school achieved A*’s, while 24 per cent of pupils studying Maths got A*’s, 56 per cent got A* to A and 80* got A* to B.

Nick Stephens achieved three A’s in English Literate/Language, History and Politics and is set to study Politics at Kings College London.

“I’m really happy with my results and hope to be a politician in the future.”

Alex Fenwick achieved A*’s in Maths and Further Maths, and a C in French, and is set to study Maths at the University of Bath.

Keen seven-a-side footballer Alex said: “I’m really pleased and over the moon with my results.

“In the future I’d like to work in finance or as a sport statistician.”

Deputy Head Girl Sian Evans achieved an A* in Politics and A’s in History and English.

”I’m absolutely buzzing with my results,” she said.

“My first choice was to study Nursing at the University of the West of England, but I’m looking to go somewhere else now and study law, history or politics.”

She added: “I’m relieved with my results as I was really nervous this morning.”

Hilary Jones, senior deputy head teacher, added: “We are absolutely delighted with the results. It’s all down to the hard work of the children and the staff.

“Teachers go the extra mile for them and they appreciate it, as they have all worked tremendously hard.”

Assistant head teacher Scott Britt added: “It’s always been a good cohort of hard working and committed students that we had high hopes for.

“It’s great to see their smiling faces and them getting their first choices.”
