A PENARTH student has been Highly Commended in an art group's competition.

Cardif and Vale College student Craig Ollerton won this year’s Cowbridge Art Group Annual Prize, while two other CAVC students were Highly Commended.

30-year-old Craig, from Cardiff, was presented with £100 and a certificate by judge Regine Williams and Maureen Frost on behalf of Cowbridge Art Group.

Craig, who has just completed his WJEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, won over the judges with his ‘Gateway to Wales’ poster; part of a graphics project promoting the country as a tourist destination.

The two students who were selected as Highly Commended also received certificates. Foundation Degree in Ceramics student Spencer Penn, 42 and from Penarth, was praised for his hand-thrown ceramics and 20-year-old Level 3 Art & Design student Sami Shah was commended for his fashion brand promotional poster.

CAVC Art and Design lecturer Adrian Metcalfe said: “The judge, Regine Williams, stressed the difficulty in making the decision due to the high quality of all the work on display. She felt all students were worthy of commendation and that the show demonstrated the high level of ability across Cardiff and Vale Art and Design Courses.

“Regine found the professionalism of the students in presenting their work and the range of subjects they examined, particularly impressive. The exhibition represented the quality of the course at Cardiff and Vale College and the strength of the teaching team.”
