THE main club lounge of Penarth Athletic Club has been renamed in honour of a family that have made a “remarkable contribution” to the rugby club.

The club committee has chosen to name the main lounge ‘The Gooding Lounge’ to celebrate the contribution of the Gooding family “to the prosperity and good fortunes of the club”.

The five Gooding siblings, Philip, Michael, Christine, Linda and Gillian, joined the club chairman Andy Jones and secretary Gordon Shumacher for the unveiling last week.

The first Gooding to join the Penarth club was the late Roy, the father of club members Michael and Phillip. Roy, who was born in Machen, became an active member of the committee helped by his wife Olive, who worked in the club for more than 20 years, while both his sons Phil and Mike, and grandson Paul, played for the club at various stages during its recent history.

Mike Gooding, who played for the club in the 1980s in virtually every single position, with the exception of lock-forward and prop, is credited with helping to save the club from bankruptcy when he took over as chairman in 1999.
