MARKETING agents have been appointed to sell off the former St Cyres School site in Dinas Powys for a mixed use development.

The site is being marketed for a mix of new housing and community and recreational facilities by marketing agents Rawlins and Madley .

Local councillors have warned that any housing development would cause traffic chaos in the village, saying that unless traffic management issues are addressed they would exacerbate bottle necks already existing in the area and increase the amount of pollution from cars stuck in traffic.

Councillors Chris Franks, Val Hartrey, Keith Hatton and Chris Williams have also questioned the need for 10,000 houses across the Vale outlined in the draft Local Development Plan.

The Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Cllr Neil Moore, has moved to dismiss housing development fears and stressed that the site will be "mixed use".

“I am delighted this important site is now on the market, and very much hope we secure a developer with the vision and ambition to deliver an attractive new development carefully integrated with the existing local community," he said.

“Originally this site was earmarked only for housing, but aware of local concerns we carried out community consultation, and after listening to local opinion the site is now being marketed as a mixed use development, including the opportunity for community and recreational uses as well as still providing much needed housing for the area.”

Some of the most popular suggested uses for the site to come out of the consultation held in 2012 were sporting facilities, housing, and allotments. A section of the land is already earmarked for a medical centre after the council entered into an agreement with Brackley Investments Limited.

Paul Madley FRICS, Partner of Cardiff based chartered surveyors Rawlins and Madley, added: “This is an outstanding development site in the sought after Vale of Glamorgan. It is a wonderful opportunity to create a master planned high quality residential and community use development within close proximity of Cardiff. I am very optimistic we will receive a great deal of interest from developers as it is very rare for a development opportunity such as this to come to the market.”
