AN opticians in Penarth is hoping to make the dreams of disadvantaged children come true by collecting shoeboxes of gifts for the Operation Christmas Child appeal.

The Specsavers store on Windsor Road is supporting the global initiative, which is run by the charity Samaritan’s Purse, and is encouraging customers to make donations.

Operation Christmas Child aims to spread goodwill during the festive season to underprivileged children around the world. The appeal, now in its 24th year, has delivered 113 million shoeboxes, which have been wrapped and packed by children and adults in the UK.

Frank Moloney, director at Specsavers Penarth, said: "For many of us, Christmas is a time to share gifts with our loved ones, and it is often too easy to take this for granted. That’s why we are pleased to show our support to this humbling campaign for the fourth year; it’s very special to know that a few gifts can make such a difference to a child’s Christmas.

"Last year we collected 400 boxes, and we’re calling on those, who are able to spare a few pounds, to help us put just as many smiles on young faces this Christmas."

When donating a shoebox you must clearly mark if you are giving gifts to a boy or girl as well as the age category you are donating to; two to four-years-old, five to nine or 10 to 14. Boxes can be filled with toys, school supplies or items such as toothpaste, soap and hairbrushes.

A donation of £3 for each box should also be made for the associated delivery costs that the charity is charged. The closing date for all boxes and donations is November 18.
