A DINAS Powys councillor who has fought a long campaign for the replacement of a key bridge into the village has been backed by the leader of the Welsh Conservatives.

Andrew RT Davies AM, who represents the South Wales Central region, met with Dinas Powys councillor Chris Williams on Cross Common Bridge earlier this week.

It comes after Councillor Williams wrote a letter to all the local AM's and MP's earlier this month calling on the Vale of Glamorgan Council to build a new junction by the bridge as soon as possible. Vale Council officers are continuing negotiations with the landowner of a site adjacent to Cross Common Bridge and hope to reach an agreement to make land available to realign Cross Common road and construct a new junction with Cardiff Road. The council recently said a new junction was the most "advantageous solution in terms of highway safety" instead of constructing a new bridge.

"I met with the Leader of the opposition in the Welsh Government, Mr Andrew Davies, and he immediately followed up with a letter to the Cabinet Member at the Vale of Glamorgan Council," said Cllr Williams.

"I am most grateful for his active ‘in person’ support and also for the letter that Eluned Parrott, from the Welsh Liberal Democrats, sent on October 21 to the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

"I am also grateful for the acknowledgements received with action promised from Alun Cairns MP, Jane Hutt AM, and David Melding AM."
