AN HISTORIC fountain in the centre of Dinas Powys has suffered massive damaged following an accident.

An appeal for has been launched for anyone that saw the incident or knows any further information.

The fountain is built into a wall around the Square, in the shape of a triangle on the Twyn.

It is located at the junction of Station Road and Elmgrove Road and opposite the Three Horseshoes pub.

The supporting wall has also been badly damaged.

Councillor Chris Franks, chair of the Dinas Powys Community Council, said people were upset to see what has happened to a part of the village’s past. Local residents on the Dinas Powys Pictures facebook page said it was a "shame" and "very sad".

Beth Parry added: "I know accidents happen and a "little village wall" might not seem significant to some people, but this is an iconic landmark in our little village. Even though I don't live in Dinas anymore I feel quite cross about this."

Cllr Franks said there had been "massive damage" to the fountain and the community council was asking a stone mason whether it could be repaired.

“The fountain has been smashed in two from what we can determine," he said.

"This is a small link with our past and is a great shame. Although the water supply was cut off some time ago it reminds everyone that not so long Dinas Powys was a rural community."

He added: "The wall was hit by a significant force. We suspect that the vehicle involved was very powerful. We are investigating this matter and have obtained CCTV evidence which is being examined. However, if anyone has information please let us know.

"The Community Council refurbished the fountain two years ago and we had hoped that it would be in good repair for many years to come. The council has made the area safe and will now have to decide what is the best course of action.”

It is believed the fountain was damaged around 8.30am on Friday morning, January 16.
