CAVATINA Singers’ concert on Saturday, March 7, was a sell-out success and raised much needed funds in support of the NSPCC and Childline.

The packed audience at Sully Old School were treated to a programme of light music including songs by Vaughan Williams and Aaron Copeland and featured the fantastically witty and light-hearted cantata, "Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo" by Michael Flanders and Joseph Horovitz.

The choir was joined by the immensely talented young baritone, Michael Lowe, who delighted the audience with his selection of Vaughan Williams songs in the first half of the programme and his tremendously stirring rendition of "Antiphon" from Vaughan Williams` "Five Mystical Songs".

In the second half, Michael joined Cavatina as the soloist in "Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo" and brought the piece to life.

Michael, from Chepstow, is currently studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, in Cardiff; however, he is equally at home in opera and musical theatre.

His credits include Captain Von Trapp in "The Sound of Music" and Javert in "Les Miserables".

At the end of the evening musical director James Bingham was able to present Pam Bridgewater with a cheque for £230 for the NSPCC.

Mrs Bridgewater was particularly thrilled to receive this donation as chairman of the Sully branch of the NSPCC as it is 70 years this year that Mrs Yeld Stevens, late of Nicells, Cog Road, commenced her support of the NSPCC in Sully.

Cavatina Singers will perform "Captain Noah" as part of their summer concert on Saturday, June 13 at Albert Road Methodist Church Penarth.

Before that, the choir will be taking part in the Dinas Powys Music Festival on Wednesday, May 13.
