WINDS of up to 60 miles an hour tore down a tree in Penarth last night.

The tree, at the junction of Coleridge Avenue and Mountjoy Avenue, knocked down a wall as it fell across the road.

Council workers cut the tree up and removed it earlier this morning.

The second half of the tree is set to be cut down tonight, amid concerns that it could become unstable and cause further damage.

Brian Maunder, who owns the property where the tree fell from, said his parents were distressed when they saw the tree had come down.

He said it was between 25 and 30 feet high, and estimated to be around 60 years old.

He added that replacing part of the wall could cost hundreds of pounds.

“I work in insurance and have had half a dozen calls about wind damage across south Wales this morning,” he said.

Wind also blew rubbish and recycling bins across the roads overnight in Penarth.

The Vale Council was also called out to deal with the following incidents across the Vale:

Roof blown off a building onto Redlands Road close to its junction with Stanwell Road.

Tree down on Llandough Hill removed.

Evelyn Street, Barry – highway tree removed.
