A YOUNG man from Dinas Powys who suffered from kidney disease at the age of eight is trying to encourage people to take part in a charity Walk for Life event on Sunday (April 26).

Robert Edwards, 20, has now made a full recovery after being diagnosed in 2004 and spending two years on dialysis before having his transplant in 2008. He is now studying music at Bridgend College as he aims for a place at university in the future.

Robert now actively campaigns for Kidney Wales and is hoping for a bigger turn out than last year to support people who have the disease.

The five mile walk will be one amongst others like it happening across Wales to raise money for the charity. Volunteers, friends and family will be in attendance to help raise awareness of the support Kidney Wales provides.

Rob said: “Kidney Wales are a great charity who really helped me through a difficult time. I’m doing really well now, so fundraising for them is the least I can do to give something back.

“I hope that people who are suffering from kidney issues can take some inspiration from my case. I’ve been well for nearly seven years now so if you’re a sufferer, just remember things really can get better.”

Kidney Wales chief executive Roy Thomas said: “We are incredibly grateful for people like Rob and the rest of the Dinas Powys fundraising team.

“Rob’s passion for playing music just goes to show how kidney disease sufferers can go on to lead a full and active life.

"The Dinas Powys branch of Kidney Wales do brilliant grassroots work, and it’d be nice to see a good showing on the day to repay their hard work and support.”
