CAMPAIGNERS are handing out badges to promote the use of the Welsh language in everyday life.

The Welsh language society (Cymdeithas yr Iaith) are out and about in Penarth with 'language and work' badges to raise awareness of the opportunities to use the language in the town.

Steffan Webb from the local branch said: "There is more Welsh in Penarth than one would think. If you choose your shops and pubs wisely you could have a day completely through the medium of Welsh and enjoy top-notch of what Penarth has to offer.

"The late Saunders Lewis (a resident of Penarth who inspired the establishment of Cymdeithas yr Iaith), an icon of the Welsh language movement, would be in awe at hearing so much Welsh and having so much choice to use the language."

In terms of the opportunities available, he said: "Need a Copy of Welsh Magazines such as Golwg and the Cymro? Why not try “Snells” newsagents? Mrs Snell uses Welsh to say “bore da” and ask for the correct change from her customers, her customers appreciate being served in Welsh.

"Do you enjoy browsing charity shops? Why not call into Oxfam to support a good cause, get a bargain and have a proper chat Keith a Jaine? Enjoy music? Well, Adrian Lewis and Pencerdd recently received an award from Cymdeithas yr Iaith for the high standard of the Welsh language welcome they offer."

Fellow member David Williams also emphasised the chances of experiencing Welsh in the town.

"There are many opportunities to speak Welsh when enjoying food and drink in Penarth. Time for a cuppa? What could be finer than visiting Foxy’s Deli where Sian Fox provides a home for many Welsh groups to meet over a drink and enjoy quality food.

"Fancy something a little stronger after all that shopping and socialising in Welsh? Around a dozen Welsh learners meet at the Bear’s Head every Friday where Jade offers a Welsh service there. One pint not enough? Go ahead to the Windsor Arms where Cymdeithas yr Iaith meet and take advantage of the opportunity to use Welsh with Ben."
