THREE schools from the Vale will be sending pupils to Cape Canaveral to visit NASA.

Youngsters from Evenlode, St Joseph's and Barry Island primary schools will set off for the space centre on May 23 and will spend the half term week there.

Penarth based company ISSET is organising the trip to promote the opportunities and knowledge of space flight and science amongst young people.

Staff and children from each of the schools met up at Evenlode Primary School in Penarth on Friday, May 1, to get to know each other before their big journey.

The pupils will all be making movies and blogs about their trip and were hard at work creating models of the planets and other space features in the classroom.

Several of the staff in attendance appeared to be more excited than the children themselves.

The school twitter page will document their travels in what is a real hands on experience for all involved.

Isabel from Evenlode, Will from St Joseph's and Ashley from Barry Island spoke about how they heard about the trip last year and have been looking forward to it ever since.

Headteacher Steve Rees said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for children and staff to visit one of the 'modern wonders' of the world to learn about space flight and conservation.

"It's great to be able to work alongside other schools and for children to work with 'like-minded children' from other settings. Children and staff are extremely excited by the trip and we hope that this will be the beginning of regular visits to the centre.

"We will be looking forward to watching the films which children will be making and wish them all the very best for their visit. Who knows, we may have a future astronaut in Evenlode."
