THE popular downhill derby will return to Cliff Hill in Penarth after a year out.

The event is part of the annual carnival day programme to take place on Saturday, July 11 and is one of the highlights of the Summer Festival which runs from July 2 to July 12.

This year, for its return, the derby will have several new features such as assisted starts, pit crews and obstacles.

There will be something for everyone as both competitiveness and creativity will be tested.

As well as the race itself, creativity will also be rewarded with the brightest and craziest karts - and the fastest - earning points as well.

The safety of both drivers and spectators is paramount and everyone is welcome to sit back and enjoy the event.

It is free to enter and provides the perfect opportunity for Penarth speedsters to test themselves against each other.

This is the 50th anniversary of the Summer Festival and the council is still looking for those who supported the event over the last five decades to send in their favourite photos to go on show.

A town council spokesman said: "As we reach the important milestone of the 50th anniversary, it seems the perfect time to reflect on the event's history.

"Many people in Penarth and throughout the Vale of Glamorgan share fond memories of the festival and over the years many of us will have accumulated photographs of various events throughout the 10-day fiesta.

"We would like to see and share these images as a way of documenting how the event has evolved over the years.

"Each year a lot of work goes into planning an event for Penarth to enjoy and we can't wait to see your favourite moments.

"If you do have images you wish to share, please e-mail digital copies to enquiries @penarthtowncouncil.gov.uk or if you only have hard copies, please feel free to bring them to West House where staff can make copies."

Entry forms for the derby, along with rules and regulations, can be found at www.penarthtowncouncil.gov.uk/events or you can contact the office directly on 02920700721 for a form.

Forms can be returned via email to enquiries@penarthtowncouncil.gov.uk or to West House, Stanwell Road, Penarth CF64 2YG.
