ONE of the founding members of East Vale Community Transport (EVCT) has retired.

Jean Roberts was the chairman of the charity which has been operating since 1986 after local groups recognised the need for community transport.

The volunteer-run service started off with just one bus but it now has two specially adapted minibuses.

Jean is the last of the original trustees and spent many years as the secretary.

In the early years, Jean oversaw a lot of local fundraising activities which included a ‘mile of pennies’ and an event on the Esplanade.

Other events included the annual quiz held in the Paget Rooms. Since its establishment EVCT has managed to provide a total of eight minibuses to help and support local residents.

She has provided leadership in a challenging time for EVCT economically in a rapidly changing world.

Along with her predecessor Margaret Read, she provided guidance, direction and stability.

Her work has contributed to thousands of older people and the disabled to get out and about to attend clubs, church, shopping and to participate on longer social trips.

It has been about supporting their independent living.

In addition, it has been about supporting the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s public transport by extending their network to those in need of a ‘door-to-door’ service.

A spokesman for the EVCT said: "Jean will no doubt be greatly missed both for her knowledge and her willingness to support EVCT.

"It is hoped that Jean can now look forward to a well-earned rest during which she is looking forward to enjoying the company of her family, especially her first grandchild."
