Bedevilled by several planning refusals over the last year, work has now started on the site of the old Cogan brickworks with a scheme which will transform the area.

Details of the £250,000 development were released by the managing director of Metropole Exhibition to the Penarth Times yesterday. They were stated to include 80 modern terrace-type houses with access roads and garage space, backed by pedestrian precincts.

The "Windsor Jack" Open Singles' Tournament commences on Monday, July 5, and continues each evening for two weeks at the Windsor Bowling Club, off Clinton Road, Penarth.

Last Sunday evening, 14 enthusiastic Sea Cadets from the shore based Training Ship Glamorgan formed a joint Guard of Honour for the route to the Royal Yacht Brittania.

A dance, described as a Penarth Pop Spectacular, is being held at a dual event at the Marina Ballroom and the Paget Rooms at the same time on Wednesday, July 7.

Dancing will be from 8pm to 1am to star attraction, Tom Jones, who will b backed by The Squires.

The evening is being organised by Penarth Round Table in conjunction with and from an idea by two local girls who are both employed in the Washington Cinema and took the initiative to invite Tom Jones to appear on behalf of the Cogan Crash Fund.

On July 9, the new East Glamorgan Area Committee of the Wales Tourist and Holiday Association will be holding their area committee meeting in the Council Offices, Penarth.

The Commander in Chief's Royal Marine Band of the Plymouth Division will be in attendance at the Trafalgar Day Parade in Penarth in October.

This welcome news was received this week by the Penarth Branch of the Royal Naval Association.

The annual movement of sailing and motor cruisers around the Bristol Channel harbours and beyond has started. Visiting the Penarth Motor Boat and Sailing Club, and mooring their craft in the Basin over the weekend were the Rear Commodore of Stourport Yacht Club (who sailed down the Severn in his conversion) and a well known friend of Bristol Channel yachtsmen.
