A SERIES of Art History lectures will be held at the Pier pavillion this July and August.

They will be led by Freelance Art History Lecturer, Stella Grace Lyons BA (Hons) Art History, University of Bristol.

These lectures are part of Penarth Pier Pavilion's evolving remit for Art and are a way to learn more about different styles, subjects and content of paintings ranging from Da Vinci to Picasso.

This first lecture series is titled How to Look at Paintings: Narrative Paintings, and are for anyone with or without a background in art, but a keen interest in paintings,

The are said to be an excellent way to learn more about the hugely exciting canon of art history in the friendly environment of the Penarth Pier Pavilion.

Stella Lyons is an established Arts professional, regularly lecturing in Art History for Saga’s Art Appreciation Holidays, the Cardiff based adult education company, Classical Education Forum, and the Worker’s Educational Association (WEA), where she has lectured on a wide range of artistic themes and periods.

She also lectures to large groups (150+) for various Art Societies and for the National Trust, as well as studying Renaissance art in Italy at the British Institute of Florence.

Receiving much praise for her work, one attendee of the How to Look at Paintings: Narrative Paintings lecture gave this testimonial:

“It’s often said that “every picture tells a story”, and my husband and I discovered this to be true when we attended Stella Lyons’ course on narrative paintings.

Stella asked us for our feelings about the overall picture, and what we could see in the painting, and what we thought it was telling us.

She guided us to see things which may not have been obvious to us at first, and to interpret objects in the paintings.

We were all encouraged to take part in discussion about each painting, and it was interesting to note that different paintings appealed to different class-members.

Stella is knowledgeable about art and made the classes both interesting and stimulating. I look forward to more such classes in the future.”

The lectures will be held on July 16, 23 and 30 as well as August 6 between 2-4pm.

Tickets are £8 per lecture. Visit https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/94435 or call the box office on 02920712100.
