THIS year's Summer Festival was officially launched on Penarth Clifftop on Thursday, July 2.

Town mayor Councillor Rosemary Cook was on hand to declare the festival open in front of artwork put on by local artists.

Members of the public and the artists themselves joined the mayor at noon to cut the tape and set the ball rolling.

Helen Davies, who lives in Sully but was born in Penarth, had her acrylic and oil paintings on display.

Her auntie Peg is also a keen painter and they both said they really enjoyed what they do but wish they had more time to do it.

They have been associated with the festival for four decades and will be at the clifftop exhibiting and selling their work throughout the festival

Helen mainly does acrylic and oil canvas work of the Welsh coastline including Rhossili beach, Tenby and Three Cliffs Bay.

Paintings are priced between £40 and £80 and were described by Cllr Cook as "absolutely lovely."

It was also announced that the RAF Falcons Parachute Team will be displaying in Penarth at around 11.45am on Carnival Day (Saturday, July 11) as part of the air show.

It is hoped that this will allow time for people to move down from the clifftop to view the Vulcan bomber at 12.15pm over the Esplanade.

This will be the Vulcan's final flight and will display for a full five minutes in Penarth before carrying on its journey from Bournemouth to Swansea.
