A TEAM at University Hospital Llandough have been called "world class" by the British Society of Gastroenterology.

The endoscopy team were taking part in the largest live endoscopy event in the UK called EndoLive held in Birmingham.

UHL was selected because of its expertise in undertaking state of the art procedures as well as its work in training and teaching.

They were one of four centres participating in the event which sought to showcase the best of British endoscopy in front of 550 delegates including consultants, nurses, and trainees.

Dr Sunil Dolwani led the University Hospital Llandough team which carried out seven successful cases.

Delegates said that the cases accurately reflected the reality of their work with a mix of cases and that the relationship between science and technology was exemplary.

Dr Dolwani said: “We are proud to be one of the centres selected which is as a result of our reputation in undertaking complex therapeutic endoscopic procedures to a level only a handful of centres in the UK do.

As a team we carry out live events for training every year but this is by far the biggest and best live event we have been part of.”

The other centres involved included University College Hospital, London, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham and Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Dr Ian Forgacs, President of the British Society of Gastroenterology said: “By common consent of the very large audience this was the best demonstration of live endoscopy ever seen in this country.

University Hospital Llandough should be exceptionally proud of the performance of the whole team of endoscopists, nurses and all the staff who put on the most professional display.”

Feedback showed that 92% of delegates rated the Cardiff cases as good or excellent.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board currently carries out 10,000 endoscopy procedures every year but want to increase that number to 13,000.
