A MAN was taken to hospital after a blaze broke out in Penarth last Thursday.

Fire crews from Penarth and Cardiff Central attended the serious fire on July 2 which involved a first floor property and the roof above the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) Penarth Branch, Windsor Road, at 10.04pm.

At 10.40pm, the building had been successfully evacuated and the man had been transferred to hospital. There were no other casualties.

The fire is believed to have been an accidental kitchen fire.

Crews used used six breathing apparatus, three hosereel jets, one safety jet and ventilation fans at the height of the fire.

Head of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service Fire Control Jennie Griffiths said on Twitter: "The fire was well alight on arrival of crews who searched building wearing breathing apparatus to ensure everyone was safe."

Crews from Penarth and Cardiff Central were mobilised and six firefighters tackled the blaze.

Local resident Mr Dolby was first on the scene as he was walking past on his way home.

He said the fire shattered glass and was 'roaring' and described the actions that he took to raise the alarm and ensure the safety of those inside the building.

He said: "I myself was surprised on how soon the fire brigade arrived and not long after the other services too and it was a job well done and due to prompt action a worse situation was avoided."

He said he had alerted a passer-by who managed to ring the emergency services after attempts to notify the inhabitants failed.

"I was glad my early reaction in raising the alarm had very likely prevented death or injury," he said.

A member of the RAFA Club said: “The tenant was taken to hospital but we saw him the following day and all OK. I think that he was just taken to hospital to check him over.”
