MEMBERS of the national action group 38 Degrees were on Windsor Road in Penarth last weekend (Saturday, August 22) collecting signatures for a petition calling upon the member states of the European Union to stop negotiations with the USA on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

Anti TTIP groups say that the trade deal could could threaten the future of UK public services, like the NHS, by handing more power to private companies and giving corporations the power to sue the UK if they don't like our laws.

Penarth man Alan Armstrong, who organised the petition signing as part of a Europe-wide day of action against TTIP, said: "All over Europe, people are realising that TTIP is a major threat to democratic government.

"If enough of us make our voices heard then our Government and the European Parliament will be forced to re-consider what they are doing."

Over two hours on Saturday morning, more than 90 people signed the petition and many more took away literature to read.

"Many people had not heard of TTIP and were shocked when they realized the implications of the trade deal," said group member Liz Rosser.

"They readily signed the petition and many of them wished us luck."

The names on the petition will be collated with all the names collected in the UK and throughout Europe, for presentation to the member states of the European Union.
