THE FINAL business case for the development of a community library in Dinas Powys has been submitted to the Vale Council.

The object of the plan is to create a Trust to take over the building and services of the existing library. The Trust would manage the change from council to community-run library and recruit, oversee training and manage volunteers.

It is hoped that the existing services would be maintained as well as new ones being developed.

Ideas include a Book Club, IT courses, Adult Education, Art exhibitions, a toy library and a café.

A key part of the bid is to attract additional uses and more people into the building opposite the Primary School.

With the need to be eventually self financing, there will be fundraising to meet core running costs. Extra funds will be required to meet special project costs.

Councillor Keith Hatton said: “The location of Dinas Powys library is close to a sheltered housing complex and a high proportion of bungalows.

The building is currently used as a social hub by older people who might otherwise face social isolation."

Julie Thompson, head teacher of the Dinas Powys primary school said: “The Primary School is fully committed to support the development of the Dinas Powys Activity Centre to benefit the literacy of our pupils through supporting a Summer Reading Project, weekly visits, as well as Language and Play Schemes and Clubs.”

Business owners and professionals have also voiced their support, identifying the necessary service provided to their clients, and provided offers of future partnership working."

Councillor Chris Franks said: "This has been a major piece of work which at times was very challenging. However it was accomplished within the time allowed.

"We feel that the community has welcomed the opportunity to be consulted and will become more engaged in services provided.

"The library will have a stand at the Village Show on Saturday, September 5, from1.30pm onwards in the Parish Hall for further information."
