MAJOR events have provided a charity with financial boosts this autumn.

Dinas Powys Voluntary Concern was established more than 43 years ago and has received donations from three key community events.

The NGS open garden scheme saw eight village gardens opened to the public in July and welcomed hundreds of visitors.

Teas, plant sales and advice were on offer to aspiring gardeners and £450 was donated to DPVC as one of their chosen charities for the third year running.

Sara Bentley, on behalf of the gardeners, presented a cheque to the chairman of DPVC in September.

The DPVC chairman was also invited to the AGM of G?yl Gerdd Dinas Powys Music Festival where he was presented with a cheque for £1500.

DPVC was one of the two charities that were nominated by the Committee to receive a donation from this highly successful May festival.

Fresh from success at Dinas Powys Village Show, Cecil Townsend displayed his vegetables outside The Three Horseshoes in the village.

Passers by were asked to guess the total weight of the produce on show at a £1 a time.

The winner with the closest guess to the actual weight of 242kg was Susie Preston. Susie took home a selection of the vegetables and Cecil’s efforts raised a total of £247.

The Three Horseshoes itself had raised £460 for DPVC at their weekly charity quiz night in July.

The Chairman of DPVC, John Fanshaw said that “one of the main aims of DPVC is to enable the more elderly residents in our community maintain their independence for as long as they wish, by providing transport, practical help, and, through our befriending scheme, companionship. Of equal importance is quality of life and we are fortunate in Dinas Powys in having so many enjoyable community events.

Having such generosity from local organisations and individuals is heart-warming and a great boost for all who volunteer and benefit from our help”.
