FIGURES revealing the wages of council officers across Wales and the UK released by a tax campaign group have been dismissed by the Vale of Glamorgan council.

Among data released by the TaxPayers' Alliance group this week, figures for councils in Wales showed that the Vale of Glamorgan council had nine members of staff earning more than £100,000 a year.

However it has since come to light that the figures are outdated and the Vale of Glamorgan have confirmed that they have just two members of staff earning more than £100,000 a year.

The Town Hall Rich List numbers, which cover the period from 2013 to 2014, show the earnings of the highest paid members of staff for every local authority in the UK.

In Wales, it has been revealed that 195 members of council staff earn more than £100,000 a year, 22 staff earn over £150,000 a year, two earn over £200,000 and one earned more than £300,000 a year.

Several councils have hit back at the figures for being out-of-date and confusingly collated to include figures outside of basic salaries.

In the Vale of Glamorgan no members of council staff earns more than £150,000, making it one of just seven authorities coming in under the mark.

A spokesman for the Vale of Glamorgan council said: "The Vale of Glamorgan Council recognises the importance of managing pay fairly and consistently. The decisions taken about pay are important in ensuring the effective delivery of public services and crucially value for money.

“The Vale of Glamorgan Council was recently praised by the Auditor General for the effective management of its finances.”
