MORE than 1,200 people attended Penarth's first ever handmade market.

The event which took place on Sunday (November 15) at the Paget Rooms raised over £300 for charity and included 43 stalls of contemporary craft and food.

It was organised by Little Otter Events and showcased the work of a number of Penarth based makers such as Ceri Lambert Designs, Anne Morgan Jewellery, Tipitots, The Power of Greyskull, Judith Martin-Jones Glass Design and Claire Cawte Textiles.

The handmade market involves makers and producers from the area selling the products that they have made and they are selected based on the high quality of their work.

The flagship event in Rhiwbina in 2013 was a great success and the event has seen over 4000 people attend since it started.

Organiser April Liddell worked in the charity and public relations sector before setting up the event two years ago.

She said that the people of Penarth also showed fantastic support for the local producers.

Ms Liddell added: "We were completely overwhelmed by the fantastic number of people who joined us for our first ever Penarth’s Handmade Market.

'There was a wonderful atmosphere in the room and it was great to see so many people leaving with bags of shopping or enjoying a bite to eat in our vintage pop-up tearoom."

She added that it was wonderful to see such support for small businesses in a busy and competitive year for retailers.

The money raised will go towards Knitted Knockers UK who had a stall at the market and their work knitting and crocheting 100 per cent cotton breast prostheses for women that have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy.

The hope is now that it becomes a regular fixture of the Penarth calendar and the market will return for a mother's day special on Sunday, February 28.
