PRESIDENT Mary Berry welcomed members of Penarth WI to the November monthly meeting.

During the business part of the meeting a report was given of the group's recent visit to the Senedd and also a visit to Wenvoe WI to take part in a Call my Bluff evening. Both visits were enjoyed by those who took part.

The speaker for the afternoon was Angela Gormon who gave them a very interesting talk on a charity, Life for African Mothers, that she was fundamental in setting up. We take it for granted in the UK that a pregnancy, nearly always, ends in the birth of a healthy baby but in many parts of Africa this is not the case.

Angela's charity helps obtain medicines and organises training for midwives in several countries in Africa. As a result, where this help has been given, mortality rates for mothers and babies has improved dramatically.

However as a result of the Ebola outbreaks skill levels have gone down due to deaths of many trained clinicians so UK midwives are volunteering to visit to help train remaining staff.

Good condition used baby clothes or knitted hats, cardigans and blankets are always welcomed. These are needed even more at present since businesses and incomes have collapsed since Ebola.

They ended the meeting with a cup of tea and a chat.

Their next meeting is their Christmas Lunch on December 10. If you have booked your place don't forget to bring your Secret Santa gift.
