AS PART of their Winter Walks Programme, the walking charity Valeways devised a walk to commemorate the life of one of Penarth’s most influential adoptive sons.

Welsh writer, author, visionary and one of the founders of Plaid Cymru, Saunders Lewis lived on Westbourne Road, Penarth for more than 30 years until his death in 1985.

Walkers visited the house, easily identifiable by the recently erected blue commemorative plaque, before visiting another significant building in Bedwas Place. The walk culminated with a poignant visit to his final resting place in Penarth Cemetery.

A spokesman for Valeways said how pleased they were with the turnout for the walk, “The walk was very well attended and was an excellent opportunity to increase our awareness of the contribution made by Saunders Lewis and also to appreciate the role Penarth has played over the years in the development of our National identity.”
