DANCERS from Penarth are set to represent Wales on the world stage this year.

Performing Arts Academy Wales (PAAW) will participate in the largest international dance competition for children with over 40 countries entering.

The competition is held in a different country each year and the team will head to Jersey this June.

PAAW opened its doors in September 2010 and trains students from 2-18 years old in classical ballet, tap, modern and musical theatre.

Students have worked with some top companies such as National Dance Company Wales and English National Ballet at iconic venues such as the Wales Millennium Centre and the Royal Albert Hall.

They have a 100% pass rate for all Imperial Dance exams with 87% receiving merits and distinction and, on a recent exam day, all students passed with high distinctions.

PAAW principal Vicky Russell said: "It's an incredible opportunity and we feel very honoured to be selected to represent Wales on a global level.

All of our students work extremely hard week after week and it’s fantastic that they have been recognised as some of the best dancers in the country.”

The judges who selected the teams included international judge Jean Louis Cabane who is the artistic director of Disneyland Paris and choreographer and British federation adjudicator, Jacqueline Storey.

Between rehearsals, the group is fundraising to send the team to the competition and will be holding their spring fayre on Sunday, March 13 at the sea cadets hall on Stanwell Crescent.
