THE VALE of Glamorgan festival of music comes to Penarth next month.

Running from May 10-20, the festival takes place at venues across the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff.

Four of the ten events which form part of the festival take place in Penarth itself.

On Tuesday, May 10, the Latvian Chamber Choir will perform at St Augustine's Church, starting at 7.30pm

They are returning to the festival and begin this year’s celebrations with a programme that features the music of up-and-coming and established composers from their homeland including Peteris Vasks who celebrates his 70th birthday this year.

Prior to the concert, at 6.30 pm, local composer Peter Reynolds talks to Mr Vasks about his work in the church hall.

On Wednesday, May 18 at the same venue, Cardiff based, organist Robert Court will perform three works for organ by Mr Vasks that encompass an impressive variety of sounds from delicate bird song to powerful outbursts of deep, dark chords.

Starting at 1.30pm, Mr Court is joined by Jose Zalba-Smith on flute who plays music by Steve Reich.

At 7.30pm on the same day at All Saints Church, Danish group, Ensemble MidtVest present a concert celebrating the music of the festival’s founder and artistic director, John Metcalf, who also celebrates his 70th birthday in 2016.

Before the concert, composer, Steph Power, will provide insight into John’s music, introducing the works to be featured in the concert in a talk starting at 6.30 pm.

On Thursday May 19 at Penarth Pier Pavilion Cinema, 1pm, Ian Skelly is joined by flautist, Jose Zalba Smith.

Mr Skelly is a presenter of BBC Radio Three's breakfast programme and an internationally published writer and filmmaker.

He has a particular interest in ecology and the environment.

In this talk, he examines the complex interaction between man and natured expressed through Mr Vasks’ music with Mr Zalba-Smith performing the composer’s work Landscape with Birds.
