BOTH Penarth Cricket Club sides won their opening games of the season last weekend.

The first eleven beat St Fagans by 74 runs on Saturday, April 30 at Croft y Genau

The visitors lost the toss and were put into bat.

From their 50 overs, Penarth made 229-8 with Ali Bukhari top scoring with an unbeaten 82 off 79 balls.

This score looked unlikely when the team was 62-5.

Sam Docherty played an impressive knock, scoring 43 off 61 deliveries and Andrew Westphal also batted well for 45.

In reply, St Fagans were bowled out for 155 off 44.3 overs.

The Penarth side was packed with bowling options and had St Fagans in trouble at 30-5, keeping the pressure on throughout.

Andrew Westphal took an impressive 4-25 of his 10 overs with the ball with Mark Thomas taking 2-25 and Steve Provis and Ali Bukkhari both with one wicket each.

There were also impressive debuts for Jack Thomas and Uzair Rehman.

The second XI also won their opener against St Fagans second XI at Penarth Athletic Ground.

Having lost the toss, Penarth bowled first with the visitors making 269-6 off their 50 overs.

Morgan Crimp took three wickets while Morgan Humphreys and Andy Graveson took a wicket a piece.

Penarth then reached their target in 42.1 overs, losing just three wickets to win by seven wickets.

Callum Carson hit a superb 126, Pete Docherty hit a useful 28, Jamie Hitchen got 57 not out and Lewis Austin finished unbeaten on 20.

On Sunday, May 1, a young Penarth side hosted a South Wales Premier Cricket League twenty-twenty festival.

Chepstow and Pentyrch were the other teams with Chepstow winning the final game against Penarth to go through to the next round.

In Penarth’s first game against Pentyrch there were excellent performances by Tom Sidford with 59 runs and Richard Skone scoring 60 runs.

With the ball, Jamie Hitchen's 1-18 helped restrict Pentyrch to 127-10 chasing 154-3.

In the decider against Chepstow, Tom Sidford scored 47 as Penarth reached 113-7.

Chepstow batted superbly, however Morgan Humphreys finished with an impressive 1-32.

Chepstow won by seven wickets.

This Saturday (May 7th) sees the first team take on Clydach at the Athletic ground.
