A PRIMARY school in Penarth recently held a "fabulous" open day to celebrate its heritage.

Cogan Primary School hosted the afternoon event on Friday, to celebrate pupils' work researching the history of the school.

Examples of the work they had done was on display, along with artefacts and photographs from the past and a 1940s-themed tea room.

Children from across the school explored different aspects of Cogan’s past including the different toys that existed, how school uniforms have changed, who lived in their houses in the 1800s and the school’s history.

Vaughan Gething, assembly member for Cardiff South and Penarth, was among those in attendance.

He said: "I was really impressed by the standard of the vintage displays from each class, and I particularly enjoyed the homemade meringues."

School governor Claire Foster added: “What an amazing heritage afternoon engaging the whole school and community.

"The children have worked so hard and the school has really made history come to life."

Susan Sibert, headteacher of Cogan Primary School said: "The children have really enjoyed looking at the history of the area, as they can easily relate to it.

"We had encouraged the children to take a lead role during this project, with our teachers just facilitating.

"They embraced the task inquisitively and have learnt a lot about Cogan and its history."
