A LONG-SERVING assistant head teacher is set to retire this summer after almost two decades of service.

Hilary Hanmer has worked at Bute Cottage Nursery in Penarth for 18 years.

But she is now preparing to experience life without small chairs, PVA glue and Cromar paint.

Staff and governors have acknowledged the vast contribution that Mrs Hanmer has given the school nursery, with a barbecue has been planned to give the stalwart a big summer send off.

She is credited with masterminding the building of a straw bale classroom, along with developing the confidence of staff, and pupils alike.

She is also said to have been the driving force in understanding and using the Welsh at the site, and leading the nursery’s achievement of successive Platinum ECO Flag awards.

Head teacher at Bute Cottage, on Bute Lane, Joanna Bryan said: "She has done all this in addition to ensuring all the children have a magical and successful time at Bute Cottage Nursery.

"She deserves a happy, healthy retirement."

Mrs Hanmer said it would be hard to say goodbye.

"It will be a wrench to leave the children, families and staff after all these years," she added

"It has been a huge part of my life and I will miss all the fun and friendship when I retire."

The chair of governors at the nursery Graham Roddis also paid tribute to her service.

"Since I’ve been on the governing body, Mrs Hanmer has been a strong advocate for the school and the staff, challenging governors and local authority to meet her high expectations for the children and for the school," he added.

"Her enthusiasm and hard work has supported Bute Cottage in becoming a friendly, engaging and enjoyable environment in which to work and learn, but more importantly she’ll be remembered with affection by the pupils, past and present."

The barbecue event will take place Monday July 18, from 5.30pm-8pm.

Everyone who has been involved with the nursery is welcome to drop in.

If you would like to join the event, contact the school for tickets.

These will cost £1 each and can be redeemed against a soft drink on the day and any profit will be given to a charity of Mrs Hanmer’s choice.

Soft drinks will be on sale but guests are free to bring their own drinks as well.
