A PENARTH student is celebrating winning a national Mathematics award.

Westbourne School student, Emily Li won a gold certificate in the UK Senior Maths Challenge.

She has been celebrating numerous awards for her Maths as she also came in the top 0.1% of 20,000 students who took a similar test in Canada.

In recognition of her ability, she has been invited to attend an intensive Maths training camp at Oxford University in August, an honour only given to the very few most able young mathematicians in the UK.

Head teacher, Ken Underhill praised Emily and her teachers on this "outstanding performance."

He said: "Emily came to us on an academic scholarship and has proved the merit of this award by her studious approach to all that she does.

"Her achievement is a credit both to Emily and her teachers and is a tremendous accolade for the value of our pre-International Baccalaureate diploma course."

Speaking about her success, Emily said: "I am determined to make the most of this honour. It will be a challenge but I intend to do my best."
