A BEFRIENDING scheme is set to continue despite a the end of grant funding.

It is hoped the scheme organised by Dinas Powys Voluntary Concern (DPVC) will carry on despite Lottery funding coming to and end.

This was reported to the charity’s AGM by John Fanshaw, the re-elected chair.

The lottery funding grant is fixed for one year with the idea being that a successful venture would attract other avenues of investment.

The service aims to provide a friendly face to those who need someone to listen to their concerns and DPVC are confident that they have prepared well enough find alternative streams of funding to keep the scheme going.

The newest initiative is the service to patients requiring transport to the new medical centre.

So far, a thousand miles had been clocked up since March with 15 regular drivers carrying 270 patients.

Patients can book transport and there is no charge but donations are accepted.

Rachael Connor, chief executive of Glamorgan Voluntary Services was the guest speaker at the meeting.

After three years of support, DPVC will initially fund the cost of employing a part time employee. but it is hoped that the scheme will secure further external financial aid.

The treasurer David Thomas reported that the organisation had received generous financial support from local organisations including Dinas Powys Tennis Club, Dinas Powys Open Gardens, Dinas Powys Music Festival and a choir concert at St Peter’s Church.

It was also revealed that two substantial legacies and also funeral collections were received.

In questions from the floor, a resident stressed that the demands for help are only likely to increase as public expenditure is further reduced.

A DPVC spokesman said they are possibly going to have to raise even more funds to meet the needs of the community.

The new committee includes vice chair Chris Franks, treasurer David Thomas, secretary Wendy Lees and new member Chris Bees.
