COMMEMORATIONS have taken place in Penarth to mark the hundredth anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme.
Almost 20,000 British servicemen died on the first day of the five month long First World War battle.
Town councillors and council staff gathered outside West House on Friday (July 1) morning.
The flags were lowered and a two minute silence was held at 11am.
