THIS year's Penarth Summer Festival was officially launched last week.

The ten day event was opened by the town mayor at a ceremony on the cliff top on Thursday (July 7).

It takes place until Sunday (July 17) with the highlight being Carnival Day on Saturday.

The festival began in 1965 and was "bigger than ever" for its 50th anniversary last year.

Penarth Town Council, who run the event, expect this year's edition to be even more impressive they have said though, and hope that everyone will find something they enjoy during the event which lasts just over a week.

A wide variety of different activities have taken place across different areas of the town over the past week.

Family events have included a Grow, Show, Share showcase at St Augustine's Church, and a hunt for beach treasures.

There have also been opportunities to learn new creative skills such as felt-making, photography and knitting, run by Vale council courses.

Tribute concerts, a Penarth Soul Club special and the annual rock and roll dance helped make up the rest of the schedule.

Local young people, meanwhile, have also been performing in a musical theatre showcase performance at The Paget Rooms under the guidance of local talent agent, Shelley Norton.

Deputy town clerk Keri Hutchings, said of the events: "It is great to see the creativity of the town on display. The enthusiasm and commitment of the artists is fitting for the community’s annual summer festival."
