PENARTH'S politicians have condemned the "horrific" attack in Nice.

More than 80 people were killed and many more injured after a lorry was driven into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in the French city.

The incident happened at around 11pm local time on Thursday evening (July 14).

It is the third major attack in France in the space of 18 months after shootings at the offices of the Charlie Hebdo magazine in January 2015 and the attacks across Paris last November.

Cardiff South and Penarth MP, Stephen Doughty took to social media to express his sadness at the news.

He said: "Awful news from Nice. Know the area where the attack happened well.

"This is one of the most dreadful summers ever."

South Wales Central assembly member, Andrew RT Davies also expressed his shock at the incident.

He said: "The attacks we have witnessed overnight in Nice were horrific, and we share the pain of a country still recovering from similarly shocking attacks in Paris last year.

"We stand shoulder to shoulder with our friends in France as they attempt to recover from these tragic events, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

"These attacks are heinous and immoral, and we continue to hope that love will ultimately prevail in this battle against hate."

Cardiff South and Penarth assembly member, Vaughan Gething, said: "It is hard to put into words how upsetting events in Nice are.

"The fact that innocent families and children have been deliberately targeted is particularly appalling.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of everyone affected in Nice and beyond."

A vigil to remember the victims of the attack will take place at The Senedd at 5pm this evening (July 15).
