PENARTH was scorching yesterday.

On what proved the hottest day of the year so far temperatures soared to over 30 degrees in the town.

Peter Knowles, co-owner of Shore on The Esplanade said it was "very busy" on the front with a large number of people making their way down to bask in the sunshine.

A reader sent us some pictures of Penarth bathing in the summer sun from the pier, and Cosmeston Lakes Country Park.

With the heatwave set to continue today Public Health Wales are advising people to use sunscreen or sun block to reduce the risk of sunburn; cover up with loose fitting clothes; wear a hat to protect the head and sunglasses to protect the eyes; drink plenty of water and avoid direct sunlight between 12pm and 3pm.

Huw Brunt, consultant in environmental health protection for Public Health Wales, said: "It is also a good idea to check on elderly relatives, friends or neighbours who may be more vulnerable to the effects of the heat.

"The usual symptoms of heat exhaustion – which can become heat stroke if left untreated – include a headache, high temperature, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and muscle cramps.

"If you are concerned that you or someone else has these symptoms, you should contact your GP or NHS Direct Wales on 0845 46 47."

The Met Office predicts temperatures to around 25 degrees Celsius today.

It will be sunny for the rest of the week - and around 21 degrees Celsius - with cloudy intervals.
