A PRIMARY school which only opened last year has received a "fantastic" inspection report.

Dinas Powys Primary School has been praised for its "good" current performance and "excellent" prospects for improvement in its recent Estyn report.

The school’s prospects for improvement rating is the highest available from the inspection which was carried out at the school in May this year.

It also focused on three key questions including outcomes, provision and leadership.

Outcomes and provision were judged to be good with leadership being rated as excellent.

The report highlights the school's strengths as being the provision of effective learning experiences, good teaching, an excellent learning environment and excellent leadership.

The school opened in 2015 following the amalgamation of Dinas Powys Infant School and Murch Junior Schools.

The school caters for pupils aged between the ages of three and eleven and there are currently has 464 pupils.

The current performance was commended with pupils having a "high standard of wellbeing", a "broad curriculum of stimulating topics" and benefiting from a very "rich learning environment."

In relation to the school's prospects for improvement, the setting out and promotion of a clear vision for the school and the bringing about of notable improvements in a short time were recognised.

The senior leadership team were also identified as a playing a significant role in promoting a professional learning culture throughout the school and using assessment data effectively to tailor the school’s provision to meet the needs of all children.

Four recommendations were laid out including ensuring that pupils evaluate their progress towards learning objectives and their own targets, providing further opportunities for staff to spread the excellent practice that occurs in a number of classes across the school, improving pupils’ use of the Welsh language outside of formal Welsh lessons and providing further opportunities for extended writing and for pupils to apply their numeracy skills independently.

The school will provide an action plan to show how it will address the recommendations

Headteacher, Julie Thompson said: "We are absolutely overwhelmed to have received such a fantastic Estyn report.

"The school was only amalgamated in January 2015 and we have achieved so much in that time.

"I am delighted with the report, which recognises the vision we have created and the hard work of all the school community."
