A BUDDING boxer is holding two major exercise fundraising events in Penarth in memory of a "wonderful" friend.

Natalie Spruce, 39, is preparing for a white collar boxing bout in Cardiff in September in memory of her friend Johnny Lake who died of cancer in March 2015.

The first event was a two hour "exercise-athon" yesterday on St David's Crescent.

On August 6, there will be a "cycle-athon" where she and her personal trainer Sarah George are dressing as Pokémon and cycling throughout Penarth, Sully, Barry Docks and Barry raising money outside businesses who are willingly supporting with donations for raffle prizes.

Several raffle draws will take place live on social media at the end of the day when Miss Spruce and her personal trainer take part in an half an hour fitness session.

She said "He was such a wonderful friend to us. He was a courageous and brave character throughout his whole life."

Her friend, Mr Lake, was diagnosed with polio at the age of two which had a huge impact on his mobility.

But, she said, "John was a fun loving kind of character throughout his life. In fact his name to many was all singing and all dancing Johnny.

"He was easy going, caring and funny."

Mr Lake was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer three years ago which is when he came to Holme Towers in Penarth.

Miss Spruce added: "The unforgettable nurses there said how inspirational John was as a character only wishing they had known him before his time at Holme Towers."

"He stole the hearts of many throughout his life and his memory shall live on in my heart, his beautiful families and many many people."

Planning for other events in the area in future is already underway.
