STANWELL School is celebrating another A-level and AS-level results day, which has seen pupils named "among the top performers in Wales".

Students saw A* to C grades make up 87 per cent of all results, with 31 per cent of pupils securing grades A* to A. Many first choice university options were confirmed as a result.

Individual departments also saw impressive results, with 40 maths students being awarded A* to A grades, 80 per cent of computing pupils securing A* to B grades, and 98 per cent of students overall achieving the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma.

After achieving the school's highest results with five A* to A grades in maths, further maths, physics, chemistry and Welsh Baccalaureate, Katie MacLeod will be heading to Emmanuel College, Cambridge University to read maths.

Fellow student Emily Walters said she was "really pleased", not only with her results but at being the first of her immediate family to go to university.

"I was given an A in English literature, A in media studies, B in history and A* in Welsh Baccalaureate," she said.

"I'm now hoping to do English literature at Birmingham University."

Eleanor Webster will be heading to Exeter University in September, having been awarded an A* in Welsh Baccalaureate, two As in German and drama, and a B in English.

William Chappell said he feels that he "could literally do anything" now that he will be reading chemistry at Wadham College, Oxford University, having been awarded three As* and one A.

Calum O'Neill, meanwhile, said he felt "underwhelmed" and plans to take a gap year in Italy.

Mark Lewis, assistant head teacher, said: “This year’s impressive A-level results are well deserved. It is most satisfying to see our students achieve their full potential and it has been a pleasure and privilege to have worked with this group of young people."

Tony Rogers, chairman of governors, said: “This has been another very good year for the school; we congratulate all of our students on their achievements and wish them continued success in everything they do in the future.”

A school spokesman added: "Excellent A level results once again put Stanwell students amongst the top performers in Wales, with many individuals securing truly exceptional grades."
