A FOOD market which caused uproar when it was planned to open in a Penarth art gallery is to be set up elsewhere in the town.

The 50 mile market will now be held at the Paget Rooms after organisers pulled out of hosting it at the Turner House gallery following negative feedback from the public.

The first market will be held on September 3 and will then take place on the first Saturday of every month.

It comes after residents expressed their anger about the proposals for it it to open in a gallery which was bequeathed to the people of Penarth for the use of art only.

But lawyer and local food campaigner Jenny Yeo and Lisa Corbett-Bailey of Old Cogan Hall Farm are still determined to make it a success and make it a positive thing for the town.

They said that they are both frustrated by the lack of indoor outlets for local producers in the area.

Mrs Yeo said: "The aim is that as a many products as possible will be sourced from within 50 miles of the venue and it is hoped the market will also attract visitors to Penarth from a wider area."

So far, 15 producers are confirmed to be attending the first market with many more expected to join the monthly event by 2017.

Mrs Yeo and Mrs Corbett-Bailey have said that local assembly member Vaughan Gething has promised to offer his support and attend the market in October

Inspired by the Borough Market in London, a programme of talks and a pop up cafe will be available as well as seasonal events with local musicians.

The first pop up cafe will be hosted by Foxy's Deli using local products.

Mrs Yeo said: "Producers’ markets in Wales suffer from our wet winters and we hope the the producers and customers will benefit from the new indoor venue."

The event is set to run in conjunction with Penarth Town Trust's Big Lunch event with signs directing people to and from both events.
