A PENARTH restaurant has been named the best in Wales for the third year running.

Restaurant James Sommerin, located on The Esplanade, has been ranked 34th in the UK with a score of seven in the 2017 Good Food Guide (GFG) owned by Waitrose.

The GFG is a guide to the very best restaurants and eateries across Britain

The Penarth seafront restaurant, which opened in 2014, is one of four Welsh restaurants in the Top 50.

Each position is earned by a score relating to editor appraisal and strength of reader feedback from the GFG.

The restaurant has won a number of awards in the past few years including best fine dining restaurant in the 2016 Wales National Food Awards and three rosettes at the AA hospitality awards in 2015.

Speaking about Restaurant James Sommerin, Elizabeth Carter, Waitrose Good Food Guide editor said: "Their menu offers a procession of simply spectacular dishes full of tantalising flavours.

"A commitment to local produce shows in everything from perfectly cooked cod with squid-ink, salty samphire and crab bisque, to treacle sponge with rosemary and olive oil ice cream.

Mr Sommerin, who as previously won a Michelin Star at The Crown at Whitebrook, is joined in the kitchen by his wife Louisa and daughter Georgia.

"James’s wife Louise is a phenomenal host, and she’s ably supported by a courteous but keen-as-mustard young team.

"One local diner told us it was the best restaurant for hundreds of miles.

"Mr Sommerin also does his bit for the community, participating in local events and organising kids’ cookery classes."

Mr Sommerin tweeted: "Really pleased with the entry in this year's top 50 Good Food Guide.

"Well done team, great achievement."
