A NUMBER of roads will be closed in Penarth on Sunday, October 2, for this year's Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon.

Around 22,000 people have signed up to run Wales' biggest marathon, with more than 2,000 registering in the final 48 hours before the entry deadline.

Roads through Penarth, which includes Terra Nova Way and Penarth Portway, will be closed at 9am on Sunday morning and should re-open in the early afternoon.

First runners should head through Penarth after 10am, with other participants making their way through the town before noon, then making their way across the Cardiff Bay Barrage and back into the capital.

Roads closer to the finish line on the marathon route should be opened after 3pm.

With several other races also taking place the day before the showpiece half marathon as part of the Festival of Running, including the Family Fun Run and Cardiff University Student Life Fun Run, close to 25,000 adults and children will participate in events over the entire weekend.

This year’s event is the first to be sponsored by Cardiff University, who continue their support following their successful partnership with Run 4 Wales for March’s IAAF/World Half Marathon Championships.

The event is once again supported by Brooks Running UK, who produce the unique finishers’ t-shirts, Brecon Carreg, who supply more than 100,000 bottles of water and award-winning supermarket Aldi.
