STEPHEN Doughty MP has announced his support for our campaign backing Penarth's high street shops.

The Labour and Co-operative MP for Cardiff South and Penarth, who is a regular shopper in the town, called the campaign "a great way" of supporting local businesses.

"Small, independent businesses are so important within our communities, and in Penarth we know only too well how precarious their position can be as they compete against supermarkets, people’s changing shopping habits, and local factors such as transport, parking problems and rents," he said.

“In recent years, we have seen a few much-loved businesses close, underlining how important it is for us to make the most of what is on our doorsteps.

"The good news though is that new businesses continue to open around the town, while others are going from strength to strength.

Mr Doughty also said he believes that small businesses have a lot to offer people.

“The distinct service and choice that small businesses provide is something we should all make the most of, and there’s so much on offer in Penarth," added Mr Doughty.

“In December 2014 and again in 2015, I took advantage of the late-night Christmas shopping initiative set up by a number of independent traders, and picked up some great gifts for family and friends. I’m looking forward to doing the same again this year, and to finding out what businesses have in store over the festive season."

The former shadow foreign minister also urged people to continue supporting Penarth's high street stores.

He said: “Of course we need to support local shops all year round, and that’s why I fully endorse the Penarth Times' campaign, and why I have supported schemes like shop in Penarth and small business Saturday.

"We all need to do our bit and build on the good work done by these schemes; by the Vale council, Penarth town council and local representatives in supporting businesses; and the Welsh Government, which has just extended its small business rates relief scheme for a further year.”
