PART of a new housing development in Dinas Powys could be named after one of the village's Olympic heroines.

Hannah Mills won a gold medal in the 470 sailing race in Rio this year and her achievements were hailed by many in the village.

Now talks are underway to see if it is possible to pay a lasting tribute to her by naming part of the Bryneithen development after her.

Ideas that have been suggested include naming a line of terraced houses Hannah Mills Row or that a road leading up to the development could be labelled Hannah Mills Lane.

Planning approval was given for 24 homes on the site of the former nursing home in December 2015.

Work is now underway on the site which features age exclusive housing for over 50s.

Vale MP, Alun Cairns is holding discussions with the developers to see if the idea is possible.

The entire site is to be officially known as Arbor Vale.

Mr Cairns said preliminary meetings with the developers have been "very positive" and that he would expect the local authority to follow suit because of popular support for honouring the local athlete.

He said: "Hannah Mills’ feat at the Rio Olympics made Dinas Powys and the whole of the Vale of Glamorgan very proud.

"I feel that we should take this opportunity to honour her by making sure that her name is forever part of the village."

Peter Reilly the commercial director of the site's developers, Portabella, said: "While we are wedded to the development being named Arbor Vale, we are listening to the public and in close discussions with local community members and the council about other naming possibilities including Hannah Mills and Bryneithin.

"One of those is the name of the private road that runs through the development.

"We will be reaching out to the local community in due course to help us choose a name and we want to ensure everyone can have their say.

"If anyone has any suggestions to add to the list of possible road names, please email info@portabella.co.uk."
