VOLUNTEERS have successfully cleaned up the Old Railway Path in Penarth, finding a number of surprising objects dumped in the area.

Despite dreadful weather, 30 volunteers gave up a few hours to help clean the area on Saturday, with items found including aluminium and fibre-glass steps, mountains of green waste and rubble, parts of a bathroom suite, and a swimming pool.

On the same morning volunteers sowed wildflower seeds donated by cycling routes charity Sustrans, on Sully Terrace green. Varieties were especially chosen to replicate those most likely to have been found along railway lines naturally.

The wildflowers will improve biodiversity in the area whilst providing a pleasant environment for residents and path users.

The newly created Railway Path Project Penarth, assisted by Penarth Tourism and Visitor Association, aims to remove waste and improve the area for residents, tourists and wildlife with the support of the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The group behind the ongoing project said it would welcome everyone who would like to join in.

Information can be found on the Facebook page - Railway Path Project Penarth.

Residents can also support the project by disposing of waste responsibly.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has been incredibly supportive of this event, said a spokesman.

The has pledged to work with the local athority to help keep the path in as good an order as possible.

The group also wished to thank Sustrans, along with traders Snells, Foxy’s Deli, Pedal Power, and everyone who donated their time on the day.
