A TALK will give an insight into the incredible life of a Penarthian who fought in the Spanish Civil War.

Television producer Greg Lewis will speak about Bob Peters who was born in the town in 1914.

The event is being held by International Brigade Cymru (IB Cymru) to mark the 80th anniversary of the war which was fought between the Republicans, who were loyal to the democratic, left-leaning Second Spanish Republic, and the Nationalists led by General Francisco Franco.

When Mr Peters' father did not return from the First World War, his family fell on hard times.

He left to find work in Canada as a teenager which is where he found politics.

He returned to Europe where he was smuggled into Spain to fight against Franco's fascist regime.

Having been badly wounded in the Battle of Brunete, he stayed on in Spain as a motorcycle despatch rider

He died in 2007 after returning to Penarth.

Mr Lewis is an BAFTA Cymru award winning presenter who has presented more than 60 documentaries and has written a book on Mr Peters' life

The event takes place at the Turner House gallery on Plymouth Road on Monday, January 9 from 6pm with a wine reception.

The talk will be followed by a question and answer session.

There will also be a display of Spanish Civil War panels on display in the ground floor gallery.

IB Cymru will also be hosting a play at the ex-servicemen's club on Windsor Road on February 23 called Dare Devil rides to Jarama, written by Neil Gore, which tells the story of a daredevil rider and a famous author who came together to fight in the civil war.
