A PLAQUE was unveiled to honour an Olympic sailing gold medalist.

Hannah Mills who won gold in Rio last summer was back in her home village of Dinas Powys to reveal the stone which is situated in The Twyn on Station Road.

Crowds of residents and school children gathered to congratulate her on her success.

Councillor Margaret Hayley, chairwoman of the community council gave a speech praising her achievements.

Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns was also present and said she would inspire the next generation.

She was presented with a bouquet of flowers after the big reveal.

Miss Mills said: "It's quite overwhelming.

"It is really nice to see everyone come out and support me.

"It's important that youngsters take up any sport because there are so many distractions these days.

"My dad took the first stomp on the plaque so he's made his mark."

She said her focus is now very much on getting ready for Tokyo where the next Olympic games will be held in 2020.
